Gary Stewart Performs Granados

Enrique Joaquín Granados (1867-1916) played an important role to help establish a golden age of classical and piano music in Spain. He was himself an accomplished pianist known for his improvisation skills who composed both vocal and piano music.

The set of "Danzas Espanolas" from which this piece is taken was composed by Enrique Granados between 1892 and 1900. They are among his earliest works.

Gary Stewart Performs Chopin

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was a renowned Polish and French composer who published his first composition at age 7 and began performing one year later. In 1832, he moved to Paris, socialized with high society and was known as an excellent piano teacher. His piano compositions were highly influential. Performed in the video is Chopin's Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 2 in E-flat arranged for guitar solo in E major, which is a more comfortable key for guitar. A Nocturne was originally a piece of music to be played in the evening, a similar concept to a Serenade. But, it came to mean simply a stand-alone piece usually for piano and with a rich Romantic melody.

Chopin was one of the foremost composers of Nocturnes writing 21 in total, and No.2 is his most famous one. The guitar was made by master luthier Michael thames. It is a copy of an Antonio Torres and has a tornravoz.

Gary Stewart Performs Tárrega

Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) was an important Spanish composer whose music and style of guitar playing became strongly influential in the twentieth century. He was central to reviving the guitar as a solo instrument in recital and concerts. Among his most popular compositions are Recuerdos de la Alhambra and Danza mora. He wrote nearly 80 original works for the guitar and over 100 transcriptions, mostly of piano pieces by Chopin, Beethoven and others.

Presented is a compilation of Four Tarrega pieces,  "Lagrima, Adelita, Sueno, and Prelude" composed by Francisco Tárrega.

The guitar is a copy of a Torres FE-17 built by master luthier Michael Thames.
